AI will replace search engines and shopping websites, says Bill Gates.

Image
The technology will be so advanced that it might drastically change how users behave. He said whoever wins the personal agent will make a significant difference because they will never use a search engine, productivity tool, or Amazon again. In his remarks on artificial intelligence on Monday at a Goldman Sachs and SV Angel event in San Francisco, Bill Gates said that this yet-to-be-created AI assistant will comprehend a person's needs and habits and assist them in "reading the stuff you don't have time to read." According to Gates, there is a 50/50 chance that the future AI winner will be a tech juggernaut or a startup. Gates said, "I'd be disappointed if Microsoft didn't come in there." He continued, "But I'm impressed with a few startups, including Inflection.AI, co-founded by former DeepMind executive Mustafa Suleyman. According to Gates, it will be some time before this potent future digital agent is ready for widespread use. Companies ...

EU fines Meta $1.3 billion for sending user data to the US.

Image
The EU has fined Facebook owner Meta a record-breaking €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) for data transfers. Officials discovered the social network's practice of transferring the data of EU citizens to US servers infringed on the crucial regulations governing digital privacy in the Union after a thorough investigation. Although Meta tried to address potential legal obstacles, the Data Protection Commission of Ireland stated that "these arrangements did not address the risks to the fundamental rights and freedoms of data subjects" in the Union. This is the most recent installment in a story that has been going on for more than ten years about how Big Tech handles the personal data of EU citizens. Simply put, European privacy law is regarded as much stricter than American privacy law, particularly focusing on individual rights. However, large tech companies with worldwide servers can easily transfer data from one server to another. It opens the door to unnecessary surveillance b...

Users can edit messages on WhatsApp.

Image
One of WhatsApp's most requested features, the ability to edit messages, has now been made available to users. The messaging service WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms Inc ( META.O ), announced on Monday that users could now edit messages they had already sent. Senders can edit their messages within 15 minutes of sending them once the feature is available globally in the coming weeks.  The feature can be accessed by holding down the message for a long time and selecting "edit" from the drop-down menu. The modified message will be marked as "edited," but the history of edits won't be visible. Editing messages is already possible in rival apps like Telegram and Signal, and last year, Twitter began rolling out the feature to some users.

China Approves Activision Blizzard's acquisition by Microsoft.

Image
Microsoft announced Friday that China has unconditionally approved its plan to acquire video game company 'Activision Blizzard', despite antitrust opposition in the United States and the United Kingdom. The fact that Activision Blizzard earlier this year stopped selling many of its games in mainland China due to a disagreement with its local publishing partner, NetEase, complicates China's approval. The two largest economies, China and the European Union have approved Microsoft's proposed $69 billion acquisition of the California-based game publisher responsible for hit games like Candy Crush, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. On the condition that Microsoft makes several commitments to increase competition in the nascent cloud-based gaming market, European regulators speaking for the 27-nation bloc approved the deal on Monday.  Microsoft claims that the State Administration for Market Regulation in China gave it the green light without any conditions. However, as of...

Dongles for iPhone and iPad are broken by iOS and iPadOS updates.

Image
Apple released iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 late last week, which among other things, gave iPhone users more wallpaper choices and added a Sports tab to the Apple TV app. There is some bad news for those who have already installed the most recent versions of iOS and iPadOS on their devices. The updates render Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter dongle incompatible with iPhone and iPad models. The device has a USB-A port connecting devices to your phone or tablet and connects to an iPhone or iPad through the charging port. Additionally, the dongle has a Lightning port that can charge an iPhone or iPad while running an accessory. The iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 updates have resulted in incompatibility with both ports. Several users reported that their dongle stopped working after updating to iOS 16.5 on Reddit. A Redditor named Zahid, for instance, states, "I am having the same issue, only with my digital audio setup. My DAC (Schiit Modi+) worked fine with this adapter connecting...
