Dongles for iPhone and iPad are broken by iOS and iPadOS updates.
Apple released iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 late last week, which among other things, gave iPhone users more wallpaper choices and added a Sports tab to the Apple TV app. There is some bad news for those who have already installed the most recent versions of iOS and iPadOS on their devices. The updates render Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter dongle incompatible with iPhone and iPad models. The device has a USB-A port connecting devices to your phone or tablet and connects to an iPhone or iPad through the charging port.
Additionally, the dongle has a Lightning port that can charge an iPhone or iPad while running an accessory. The iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 updates have resulted in incompatibility with both ports. Several users reported that their dongle stopped working after updating to iOS 16.5 on Reddit.
A Redditor named Zahid, for instance, states, "I am having the same issue, only with my digital audio setup. My DAC (Schiit Modi+) worked fine with this adapter connecting my iPhone until I upgraded to iOS 16.5 this morning. Now it just gives a "draws too much power" error message and doesn't even charge my phone any longer, let alone communicate with the DAC."
The user "Zaman," an iPad owner, shares his heartbreaking story on the Apple Community website. "Today's update is 16.5. MIDI music apps are used on my iPad, the 7th generation. I have a charging Apple USB Lightning camera adapter. The iPad's charging port is no longer functional. I've experimented with numerous Apple cables. It's not a hardware problem because the adapter will charge my iPhone. On the iPad, I've restarted it numerous times. Nothing has changed. Only when a direct connection is made, not via an adapter, does charging occur. Are there any additional options?"
According to the online Apple Store, Apple's device, referred to as a camera adapter, is used to connect USB-A accessories to iPhones and iPads. After connecting the Lightning to the USB 3 Camera Adapter, the Photos app is automatically opened, allowing users to select and import photos and videos, which are then sorted into albums. This information targets a knowledgeable audience in a neutral and informative tone in the public domain.
Apple will likely expedite the release of iOS and iPadOS 16.5.1 updates that aim to resolve the current issue. As a side note, the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter is priced at $39 by Apple.
