OpenAI has released the free ChatGPT iOS app
OpenAI has launched an iOS app for ChatGPT, promising that an Android version is coming "soon." The application supports voice input using OpenAI's open-source Whisper speech recognition model, syncs chat history with the web and is free to use. The app works on iPhones and iPads and can be downloaded from the App Store here. According to OpenAI, the app will first go live in the US before being made available in more countries "in the coming weeks."
OpenAI did not previously hint at a mobile app, but it makes sense, given ChatGPT's enormous popularity. The AI chatbot debuted in November of last year and quickly gained popularity. Some outside estimates claim that the app had 100 million users by January of this year, though OpenAI has never confirmed these figures. The Microsoft Bing app, which gives users access to the company's GPT-4-powered chatbot, has proven the most effective way to use OpenAI's language models on mobile. Some users will switch to ChatGPT from Microsoft, which has been luring people to Bing and Edge with access to its chatbot. Introducing an official ChatGPT should discourage people from downloading the countless spam and fake apps claiming access to mobile chatbots.
Of course, ChatGPT's problems are the same for both mobile and the web. These include concerns over privacy and the bot's propensity to fabricate information with complete confidence. OpenAI only recently allowed users to make conversations private, and the app's home screen (as seen above) still warns users not to share "sensitive information" on the app.
