Meta Announced: Facebook Messenger App to Say Goodbye to Apple Watch by the end of May.
Meta has announced that it will be discontinuing the Facebook Messenger app for Apple Watch at the end of May, which means that users will no longer be able to reply to messages directly from their watch.
[Image from Facebook Messenger]Some users have received notification of the app's imminent removal, while others have not. However, all users will still receive Messenger notifications on their watches. When asked to clarify the situation, a Meta representative provided a statement to Reviewgeek.
"From the end of May, individuals will not be able to respond to Messenger notifications from their Apple Watch, although they will still receive them if paired. Nevertheless, they can continue using Messenger on their iPhone, desktop, and web."
Meta did not explain why it is discontinuing its Messenger app for Apple Watch, which was launched in 2015. This app enabled users to send voice clips, Likes, stickers, and more without opening the corresponding app on their smartphones.
Some users on Facebook suggested that the reason for discontinuing the app could be that it reduced the time spent on Messenger on smartphones by allowing users to respond to messages on their wrists. However, the app is part of a long list of third-party services that have discontinued watchOS development over the past few years due to the perception of redundancy or a lack of user interest. Other notable apps discontinued on Apple Watch include Twitter, Instagram, Target, Trello, Slack, Hulu, and Uber.
Over time, Apple has shifted its focus away from promoting the Apple Watch as a platform for apps and has emphasized fitness and health features as the primary functionality. Recent rumors suggest that Apple plans to incorporate interactive widgets into the watchOS 10 redesign, indicating that dedicated apps have yet to prove popular.
Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg analyst, thinks that Apple's decision to switch to a widget-based interface for the Apple Watch acknowledges that a smartphone-like app experience is only sometimes suitable for a watch. According to Gurman, Apple Watch apps have gained little popularity. However, because this change represents a significant departure from the current app-focused experience, Apple may offer the new interface as an option rather than making it mandatory for all users.
According to Gurman, the upcoming software update for the Apple Watch will bring significant changes and could be one of the most extensive updates since its launch. As for the hardware, only minor updates are expected to be announced later this year, making this software update the most significant change for the Apple Watch in 2023.
